Culinary Showdown. Ramsay & Oliver

Two of the most famous chefs of our time are battling it out for their warm spot at the stovetop: Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay.
If we compare cooking to music, then cooks can be compared to musicians. Well then: Gordon Ramsay is a classical pianist who gives concerts in special halls for a not-so-wide audience, and Jamie Oliver is a rock guitarist who plays in stadiums and arenas.

Each of them is a master of their own musical style, and their styles are quite different.

What helps them stay current, trendy and everyone's “on their plate” at their advanced age? Let's get to the bottom of it.

Let's start from the beginning.

Mr. Jamie Oliver was born in England in 1975, and Mr. Gordon Ramsay has been a native of Scotland since 1966.

Gordon intended to become a professional soccer player. Unfortunately, because of a meniscus injury, he was forced to give up sports and direct all his ambitions and competitive spirit to show his professionalism in a new field for himself - cooking.

For Jamie Oliver, cooking is a family affair. It can be said that he was prepared to cook from childhood, naturally in the atmosphere of family traditions.

Ramsay and Oliver

Styles of their own.

Gordon Ramsay has become a classically French-educated chef. His goal is to create unique dishes that are difficult to prepare at home. Of course, his restaurants have collected Michelin stars (16 in total): people come there not only to eat delicious food, but also to get a comprehensive experience.

Jamie is more into everyday food. He likes to cook from regular products, using professional techniques and practices.

Of course, the journey into the profession itself influences a lot of things. So it has also influenced the culinary views and methods, ways of serving dishes of famous chefs. Their culinary concepts differ in many ways, which is always of interest to the public. This always creates “a bit of drama, which is beneficial for PR”. As Jamie Oliver says himself.

"Daddies will feed everyone!"

Jamie Oliver founded the Fifteen restaurant in London and the Fifteen Foundation, a related charity that trains young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to become chefs. Jamie has also opened Jamie's Italian, a chain of street food restaurants. He also publishes cookbooks including his own Jamie Magazine.

He has won many prizes and awards, including an award for the Naked Chef show. He is known for his cooking shows Jamie's Kitchen and Cooking in 30 Minutes.

Ramsay has opened a number of successful restaurants around the world, from the UK to Singapore. He has also become a screen star thanks to shows such as Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen, Hell's Inn and Masterchef USA.

For their achievements, they both have been appointed members of the Order of the British Empire.

Adequate competition.

It's pretty clear that “boys will always quarrel and bump foreheads”! And when chefs Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay became famous, their conflicts started to be shown publicly. Many sources also claim that these two culinary legends love to express themselves about each other in a scathing manner.

Ramsay once called Oliver a “one-pot wonder,” referring to how easy it is to mix all the ingredients in one pot, put it in the oven and come back for the finished dish an hour later, as Jamie does in most of his recipes.

Oliver in turn suggested that “if he had to choose between the cookbooks of Gordon Ramsay and Tana Ramsay, his wife, he would 100% choose Tana's book,” recognizing her as the best cook of the Ramsay couple.

However, one incident did cause a big scandal. Once again speaking against his competitor, Jamie had the indiscretion to mention the number of children each of them had. He mentioned it in the wrong context and in the wrong place. This had an extremely negative reaction from both Ramsay's family and his fans, because shortly before Gordon and Tana had experienced the loss of their unborn baby. Of course, they took Oliver's comment to heart. Ramsay hardly spoke to Jamie after that.

Family.

They are both fathers of many children. Gordon and Jamie now have five children each! They have wonderful wives. Obviously, family traditions and bonds mean a lot to them.

“We're always cooking something together,” Jamie says of their kids. And Gordon believes that “the kids should be the ones who help in the kitchen, setting and clearing the table, cooking.”
Professional solidarity.

The thaw in their relationship finally occurred in May 2019, when Jamie's restaurant empire came crashing down. Gordon did not gloat, but expressed deep sympathy for his colleague in the shop, praised his talent and considered it unacceptable on his part to revel in such failures. As a sign that the feud is over, Ramsay said they are now family friends. And last year they vacationed together in Cornwall.
“Our children are about the same age and they don't need to see their fathers fighting with each other.”

As the classic saying goes, “After a good dinner, you can forgive anyone, even your in-laws.”
It is wonderful that there is now only adequate competition between them. After all, the moods of famous cooks can reflect on us. By the way, Gordon Ramsay had the honor and pleasure to cook dinner for our head of state as well.
