The creator of the miniskirt

Mary Quant

Mary Quant (1930-2023) was the most iconic fashion designer of the 1960s. A design and retail pioneer, she popularized the miniskirt and other daring looks.
She was born and raised in London to two schoolteachers. After her parents refused to let her take fashion courses, Quant studied illustration at college, where she met her future husband, aristocrat Alexander Plunkett Green.

In 1955, Mary Quant's husband purchased a property in a London neighborhood frequented by the Chelsea Set, a group of young artists, filmmakers, and socialites interested in exploring new ways of living and dressing. They opened a restaurant in the basement of the new building and a boutique called Bazaar on the first floor.

Initially, Quant supplied the store with clothes she found in the wholesale market, seizing the opportunity to offer a new approach to women's style. But she soon became frustrated with the available clothing and decided to start supplying the boutique with clothes of her own design.

Fashion is a tool for competing in life outside the home
Mary Quant's designs reflected the social movements of London at the time. The young English beatniks of the late 1950s were bold in their clothing and appearance. Quant wanted to make clothes that represented vitality and freedom, and she created the first miniskirt.

Although Quant is probably best known for her miniskirt, her influence is much broader than this iconic piece of clothing; she created cosmetics, tights and underwear, rainwear, shoes and boots, interior design items, and many other products with distinctive packaging and a daisy-shaped logo that were sold around the world.

Quant died at her home near London, April 13, 2023 at the age of 93.

“I feel like fashion is about life. It's about everything. It's about the way we sit, the way we move, the way we talk, the voice style. It's about food, it's about what we eat...”
I think the point of fashion is not to look at someone because you're bored. I think the point of dressing up for women should be:
1) to get noticed;
2) to make you look sexy;
3) to make you feel great. I think we dress to just keep warm.”
